How often should you test smoke alarms?

The monthly test takes a few seconds: press the test button until you hear the loud alarm. The 10-year replacement date is on the back of the alarm, not the date you fitted it.

The answer

Test smoke alarms once a month, and replace the whole alarm 10 years after its manufacturing date.

Range: Monthly and 10 years · checked 6 November 2026

1month

Typical interval

What changes it

  • Battery or sealed 10-year alarm: sealed alarms still need the monthly test and the whole unit goes at 10 years.
  • Hardwired alarms with a battery backup: test monthly and replace the backup battery as the manufacturer says.
  • A chirp every 30 or 60 seconds usually means a low battery; a chirp that continues after a new battery means the alarm is at the end of its life.
  • Several alarms on one floor: test each one, not just the nearest.

Do it

  1. Press and hold the test button until the alarm sounds.
  2. Ask someone at the far end of the home to confirm they can hear it.
  3. Note the manufacturing date on the back and replace the unit when it reaches 10 years.
  4. Vacuum the vents now and then, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
