How often should you trim a hedge?

A hedge is not a lawn. Most species put on enough growth in a season for one or two cuts, and trimming too often stresses the plant and removes the flowers and berries that wildlife uses.

The answer

Trim most hedges once or twice a year, and formal hedges up to three times a year.

Range: 1 to 3 trims a year · checked 6 November 2026

Typical interval

What changes it

  • Formal, tight hedges such as box or privet: up to three cuts.
  • Informal and mixed hedges: one cut, or a rotational cut over two years.
  • Check for active nests before cutting and delay if there is one.
  • The RHS lists the right time for each species; check before you cut.

Do it

  1. Check for active nests before you start.
  2. Cut the sides first, then the top, working along a string line.
  3. Remove no more than the year’s growth.
  4. Clear the clippings and mulch around the base if the hedge needs it.
